Venezuela's Chavistas stunned by Maduro government's embrace of Trump
Original: ‘It’s utter surrealism’: Venezuela’s Chavistas lament government’s embrace of Trump
Supporters of Venezuela's governing Chavista movement are expressing dismay and disbelief at their government's increasingly friendly stance toward Donald Trump, calling it 'utter surrealism'. The shift marks a striking reversal for a movement built on decades of anti-American rhetoric, and has left longtime loyalists questioning the direction of the country's politics and foreign policy.
Why now: The apparent ideological reversal of Venezuela's ruling movement toward a longtime US adversary is shocking to its own base.
