Greece seeks EU backing for asylum suspensions and return hubs
Original: #Greece seeks #EU backing for #asylum suspensions, return hubs Greece will seek EU backing for suspending asylum procedu
Greece will ask the European Union to back plans for suspending asylum procedures during sudden migration surges and for sending rejected asylum seekers to third countries. The proposal is being raised as European home affairs ministers meet, testing how far the EU is willing to go on hardline migration measures and drawing debate over asylum rights.
Why now: European home affairs ministers are meeting, and Greece is pushing the migration issue onto the EU agenda at a time of heightened political sensitivity over asylum policy.
