Trump credits deportations for record-low crime; experts disagree
Original: Trump and his allies credit deportations with record low crime. Experts disagree https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202
Donald Trump and his allies are claiming that his mass deportation campaign is driving US crime to record lows. Criminologists and other experts dispute the connection, pointing out that crime had been falling broadly since before the deportations began, and that factors such as economic trends and policing play larger roles than immigration status. The dispute has become a fresh flashpoint in the debate over the administration's immigration enforcement agenda.
Why now: The White House is pushing a crime-decline narrative to justify mass deportations, and experts are publicly pushing back.
