EU turns off funding tap to Sierra Leone

Original: bolle jos sierra leone

Dutch media report that the European Union is stepping up pressure on Sierra Leone's leadership by closing the funding tap, cutting off millions in much-needed aid. The reporting suggests those in power in Sierra Leone will not change course because of European sanctions, framing the measures as pressure that hurts the country's population more than its rulers. The nickname 'Bolle Jos' circulating online refers to the Sierra Leonean president at the centre of the dispute.

Why now: New EU sanctions and aid cuts against Sierra Leone have just been reported in Dutch media.
