North Carolina agencies sign immigration enforcement agreements with ICE
Original: North Carolina state law enforcement agencies sign immigration enforcement agreements with ICE
North Carolina state law enforcement agencies have signed agreements with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to cooperate on immigration enforcement. Outlets including WUNC and WFAE are covering the move, which expands local and state officers' role in federal immigration actions. The agreements typically allow deputized officers to perform certain immigration enforcement duties, a practice that has drawn both support and criticism elsewhere in the country.
Why now: Immigration enforcement cooperation between state agencies and federal authorities is a politically charged topic drawing wide public attention.
