U.S. Army Picks Five Firms to Prototype Maritime Strike Missile
Original: U.S. Army Picks 5 to Prototype Long-range Maritime Strike Missile
The U.S. Army has selected five contractors to prototype a long-range maritime strike missile, part of its effort to field a ship-killing capability from land-based launchers. The program would let the Army hit naval targets at long range, expanding its role beyond ground combat. Defense observers are watching which companies were chosen and how quickly a working missile could be fielded.
Why now: The Army's move into anti-ship strike capabilities is a significant development in U.S. defense planning amid Pacific-focused priorities.
