Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Depoliticize Military Promotions

Original: Reps. Houlahan, Strickland, Sen. Blumenthal Introduce Bicameral Legislation to Depoliticize Military Promotions

Representatives Chrissy Houlahan and Marilyn Strickland, along with Senator Richard Blumenthal, have introduced bicameral legislation aimed at removing political influence from US military promotions. The bill would seek to ensure officer confirmations proceed on merit and timeline rather than being delayed for policy disputes. It comes after recent high-profile holds on military nominations in Congress drew criticism for disrupting leadership at the Pentagon.

Why now: Ongoing partisan holds on military promotions in Congress have made the issue newly urgent.
