Newport Opens No Emergency Homeless Shelter During Weekend Storm
Original: No Emergency Homeless Shelter in City During Weekend Storm
Newport did not open an emergency homeless shelter during last weekend's storm, leaving people without housing without a designated place to seek refuge. Local coverage of the decision has raised questions about how the city plans for severe weather, with residents and advocates expected to press officials on whether a cold-weather or storm shelter protocol should be put in place before the next storm.
Why now: The storm hit over the weekend while the city had no shelter open, drawing concern about vulnerable residents' safety.
