Joachim Gauck warns Chancellor Merz against resigning

Original: joachim gauck

Former German president Joachim Gauck has publicly warned Chancellor Friedrich Merz against stepping down, bluntly saying a resignation would make him a 'complete political idiot' (Volltrottel). The unusually harsh wording from the former head of state has drawn wide attention in Germany, as commentators weigh what the intervention says about pressure on Merz and his leadership.

Why now: A former federal president publicly and bluntly advising the current chancellor against resignation is an extraordinary intervention in German politics.
