UN experts urge Pakistan to free lawyers held on terrorism charges
Original: UN experts call on Pakistan to release human rights lawyers rearrested on terrorism charges
United Nations human rights experts are calling on Pakistan to release human rights lawyers who were rearrested on terrorism charges shortly after earlier detention. The experts say the arrests appear to target lawyers for their legitimate human rights work and are urging Pakistani authorities to drop the charges and free them immediately.
Why now: Fresh arrests of rights lawyers on serious terrorism charges have drawn international condemnation and renewed scrutiny of Pakistan's treatment of human rights defenders.
