Trump says he's 'looking at' opening US military base in Venezuela

Original: Trump says he’s ‘looking at’ opening US military base in Venezuela

President Donald Trump said the United States is 'looking at' the possibility of opening a military base in Venezuela, a sharp escalation of Washington's posture toward the government in Caracas. The remark signals potential US military footing in the country and is drawing attention given months of tensions, strikes on alleged drug vessels and pressure on Venezuela's leadership.

Why now: A US president openly considering a military base in Venezuela would mark a major escalation in US-Venezuela relations.
