IAEA Refers Iran to UN Security Council
Original: IAEA Reports Iran to UN Security Council
The International Atomic Energy Agency has reported Iran to the United Nations Security Council, according to the Arms Control Association. The referral is a significant escalation in international oversight of Iran's nuclear programme, giving the Security Council a formal role in addressing Iran's compliance with nuclear safeguards obligations. Such a move could open the way to renewed diplomatic pressure or further measures against Tehran.
Why now: A formal IAEA referral of Iran to the Security Council marks a major escalation in the nuclear dispute and is drawing immediate global attention.
