San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has said he will never endorse sports betting companies, calling the growth of gambling in sport 'very sad'. The French centre's stance sets him apart in the NBA, where betting sponsorships have become widespread since legalisation expanded across the United States. His comments have drawn attention to the debate over gambling's deepening ties with professional sport.
Why now: A high-profile NBA star publicly rejecting lucrative betting endorsements amid growing concern over gambling's role in sport is unusual and striking.
