UN urges world to keep its promises to the Marshall Islands
Original: The Marshallese people have waited, with extraordinary dignity, for the world to keep its promise
The UN human rights office says the Marshallese people have waited with extraordinary dignity for the world to honour its commitments, a reference to the lasting legacy of decades of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands. Communities continue to seek recognition, compensation and support for health and environmental harm. The statement calls on states to finally deliver justice and meet obligations owed to the Marshallese.
Why now: The UN human rights office publicly renewed its call for justice for the Marshallese people, drawing attention to unresolved nuclear-testing grievances.
