Real Madrid submits Negreira case dossier to UEFA
Original: UEFA receives 'substantial' dossier from Real Madrid on Barcelona's payments to ex-referees chief https://www.nytimes.co
Real Madrid have handed UEFA a 'substantial' dossier concerning Barcelona's payments to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former head of Spain's refereeing committee. The submission escalates the so-called Negreira case, in which Barcelona allegedly paid the ex-official over several years. Real Madrid, Barcelona's fiercest rival, has been among the most vocal parties pushing for sporting sanctions, and UEFA must now decide whether to open disciplinary proceedings.
Why now: The case touches on competitive integrity in Spanish and European football, and Real Madrid's formal action raises the prospect of UEFA sanctions against Barcelona.
