Brazil moves to shield its elections from Trump pressure
Original: Brazil shields election from Trump
Brazilian officials are taking steps to protect the country's electoral system from foreign interference, amid tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump. The move follows Trump's repeated criticism of Brazilian authorities and his public support for former president Jair Bolsonaro, who faces charges over the 2022 election. Commenters are debating Brazil's sovereignty and the wider US-Brazil relationship.
Why now: Ongoing US-Brazil tensions over tariffs, sanctions and Trump's support for Bolsonaro have made Brazilian election protection a live political issue.
