Merz accuses far-right AfD of being backed by Russia

Original: Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the far-right Alternative for Germany is backed by Russia, stepping up his rhetoric again

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has accused the far-right Alternative for Germany party of being backed by Russia, intensifying his rhetoric against the opposition. The AfD won two regional elections last month and leads in all major national polls, making it the strongest political force in the country. Merz's comments add to growing debate over the party's rise and its alleged ties to Moscow ahead of future elections.

Why now: The AfD's surging poll numbers and recent regional election wins have put the party at the centre of German political debate.
