Christa Pike Execution Fight: UN Cites Torture Claim
Original: Can Christa Pike REALLY Stop Her Execution? UN Says TORTURE — What About Colleen’s Mother?
Christa Pike, the only woman on death row in Tennessee, is contesting her execution, and UN human rights experts have weighed in, reportedly calling the prolonged wait conditions torture. The debate also centers on the family of Colleen Slemmer, the student Pike was convicted of murdering in 1995. Supporters point to her youth at the time of the crime and clemency arguments, while victims' advocates say the focus ignores the pain of Slemmer's mother, who has waited decades for the sentence to be carried out.
Why now: Pike faces a scheduled execution and new international human rights criticism has reignited debate over her clemency case.
