Haiti face Dominican Republic with political stakes running high

Original: république dominicaine – haïti

Attention is turning to a football matchup between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with Haitian supporters framing the game as more than sport. Haitian commentator Rezo Nòdwès argued that a victory for Les Grenadiers would strike a blow against the ambitions of Dominican President Luis Abinader, reflecting wider tensions between the two neighbours who share the island of Hispaniola.

Why now: Ongoing political tensions between Haiti and the Dominican Republic are spilling into public interest around the football fixture.
