California has banned child marriage, becoming the 18th US state to outlaw the practice outright. The move ends the ability of minors to marry, even with parental consent or judicial approval, which supporters argued left children vulnerable to coercion and abuse. Advocates have campaigned for years for a full ban, while opponents had raised concerns about teenage pregnancies and parental rights. Discussions are focusing on which states may follow California's lead.
Why now: California's new ban is a significant step in an ongoing national debate over underage marriage laws.
