A coalition of US states and cities has filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's Environmental Protection Agency over its repeal of emissions rules. The legal action, reported by the Guardian on 1 October 2026, marks the latest clash between Democratic-led state governments and the federal government over climate policy, with plaintiffs arguing the rollback unlawfully abandons limits on planet-warming pollution.
Why now: It is a major new legal challenge to the Trump administration's environmental deregulation, drawing wide attention given its implications for national climate policy.
