Democrats are preparing to introduce the Stop the Settlements Act, legislation aimed at halting construction of new Israeli settlements in occupied territories and blocking expansion of existing ones. The bill would use punitive financial sanctions and a strict ban on imports connected to settlement activity. Supporters frame it as enforcing long-standing US policy against settlements, while the measure is likely to sharpen divisions within the party and spark criticism from opponents.

Why now: The bill touches the highly contested issue of US policy toward Israel and settlements, drawing attention amid ongoing debate over Gaza and West Bank policy.
