Brazil anxious over fate of patron saint ahead of election
Original: ‘No one disrespects Our Lady’: fears for Brazil’s patron saint grip country ahead of election
Concern is spreading across Brazil that the country's patron saint, Our Lady Aparecida, has been disrespected, with the phrase 'No one disrespects Our Lady' circulating widely in the run-up to the national election. The sentiment reflects how Catholic devotion and electoral politics have become entangled, as voters frame the vote in religious terms.
Why now: Tensions between religion and Brazil's polarised election campaign are making devotees fear for the honour of the country's patron saint.
