UN experts urge Pakistan to free re-arrested rights lawyers
Original: UN experts call on Pakistan to release human rights lawyers re-arrested on terrorism charges - JURIST - News
United Nations human rights experts have called on Pakistan to release human rights lawyers who were re-arrested on terrorism charges. The experts argue the detentions appear linked to the lawyers' legitimate human rights work and have urged Pakistani authorities to drop the charges and guarantee protections for legal defenders. The appeal intensifies international scrutiny of Pakistan's treatment of activists and its use of terrorism legislation against critics.
Why now: The UN's public intervention in a high-profile detention case draws fresh attention to human rights conditions in Pakistan.
