South Korea Threatens Ukraine Over North Korean Soldiers' Transfer
Original: Why Is South Korea Threatening Ukraine Over the Transfer of North Korean Soldiers?
South Korea is warning Ukraine against transferring captured North Korean soldiers, reportedly to South Korea itself. The dispute touches on Seoul's constitution and law, which complicate accepting defectors or prisoners taken while fighting for Russia in Ukraine's war. The issue raises questions over the fate of North Korean troops deployed by Pyongyang to support Moscow, and how Kyiv, Seoul and Moscow will handle prisoners and defectors.
Why now: Captured North Korean troops fighting for Russia have created a diplomatic standoff over where they should be sent.
