The New York Times Book Review is examining 'weird girl lit', the label given to a strand of contemporary fiction and writing by young women that embraces the strange, uncanny and unconventional. The piece weighs what the category actually covers and how its offbeat, feminist-leaning sensibility has taken hold with readers.
Why now: The 'weird girl' aesthetic is a current cultural talking point, and a major book review taking it seriously draws attention.
