An artistic illustration of the GRAPES-3 muon telescope accompanied by lightning is circulating in science news. The GRAPES-3 facility, a large muon detector operated in India, studies cosmic rays and how thunderstorm activity affects particle showers reaching Earth. The image highlights the observatory's ongoing research into the link between atmospheric electricity and high-energy cosmic particles.
Why now: The striking depiction of the telescope under lightning draws attention to its research on thunderstorms and cosmic rays.
