Trump marks July 4th at National Mall with political address

Original: Trump celebrates July 4th in National Mall address, repeatedly touches on politics

Donald Trump marked Independence Day with an address at the National Mall in Washington, using the patriotic occasion to repeatedly touch on political themes. Speeches at the July 4th event are traditionally celebratory rather than partisan, so the political content of the remarks is drawing attention and commentary from observers and critics alike.

Why now: A sitting president blending partisan politics into a traditionally non-political holiday address is naturally controversial and newsworthy.
