Massachusetts lawmaker urges UK to cancel Orange Order parade
Original: Massachusetts lawmaker urges UK to cancel Orange Order parade in Northern Ireland
A Massachusetts lawmaker is calling on the UK government to cancel an Orange Order parade in Northern Ireland. The appeal touches on the long-running controversy over loyal order marches, which remain a flashpoint in the region, particularly around paraded routes past Catholic areas. The intervention by an American politician in a UK and Northern Ireland matter is likely to draw attention on both sides of the Atlantic.
Why now: An American politician intervening in a sensitive Northern Ireland parading dispute is unusual and politically charged.
