Oregon's top housing official did not report her husband's involvement in projects financed by her own agency, disclosing the conflict only after ProPublica asked about it. A former official criticized the lapse, saying oversight should not depend on investigative journalism raising the question first. The report is drawing attention to conflict-of-interest disclosure rules for state housing agencies.
Why now: A new ProPublica investigation has just revealed an undisclosed conflict of interest by a senior state official.
