Tom Kim chases Asian Games gold and exemption from military service
Original: Tom Kim aims to clinch Asian Games title and avoid military service in South Korea
South Korean golfer Tom Kim is targeting a gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, which would earn him an exemption from South Korea's mandatory military service. Winning the title alongside teammates would spare him and his fellow golfers from the roughly two-year conscription requirement, adding high stakes to the tournament.
Why now: South Korea's mandatory military service rules make a sports gold medal a rare exemption, drawing attention to Kim's bid at the Asian Games.
