Home Assistant renames its cloud service
Original: Big Tech ruined the cloud, so we're renaming ours
Home Assistant, the open-source smart home project, says large technology companies have degraded what 'the cloud' means through lock-in and subscription models, and is renaming its own cloud offering in response. The announcement argues that the term no longer signals privacy-friendly, user-controlled services, and positions the project's paid cloud as an alternative that keeps local control central.
Why now: The Home Assistant announcement is sparking debate over whether 'cloud' as a term has been damaged by Big Tech practices.
