The ROS and Gazebo project management committees have approved REP-158, an enhancement that adds OpenUSD to the existing URDF and SDF formats for describing robots and their environments. Contributors from Robotech.ai, NVIDIA, and Ekumen were credited for their work on the proposal, which extends how robotics projects represent 3D scenes and simulation data.
Why now: OpenUSD adoption is a significant step for interoperability between robotics simulation and the wider 3D ecosystem, notably NVIDIA's tooling.
