UN human rights chief calls Ukraine war a catastrophe that must end
Original: Ukraine war ‘a human rights catastrophe’ that must end, says Türk
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has described the war in Ukraine as a human rights catastrophe that must end. He pointed to the heavy toll on civilians since Russia's full-scale invasion, including deaths, injuries and widespread destruction, and renewed calls for a cessation of hostilities and accountability for violations.
Why now: The UN's top human rights official publicly demanding an end to the war keeps Ukraine in focus amid ongoing civilian casualties and diplomatic pressure for peace.
