New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced at a news conference that Attorney General Letitia James will serve as special prosecutor and take over a case. Hochul said she made the decision after learning troubling details about how authorities, including the local district attorney, had handled a woman's claims, prompting the district attorney's office to be removed from the matter.

Why now: The governor's rare move of removing a local district attorney and assigning the state attorney general has drawn attention to questions about how the original case was handled.
