Tom Kim closes in on Asian Games gold and military service exemption
Original: Tom Kim on verge of Asian Games gold (and avoiding military service)
South Korean golfer Tom Kim is on the verge of winning gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, a result that would also exempt him from South Korea's mandatory military service. Under South Korean law, male athletes who win gold at the Asian Games or medal at the Olympics receive an exemption. A victory would mark a major career milestone for the 21-year-old PGA Tour winner while easing one of the biggest obligations facing young South Korean athletes.
Why now: His likely gold medal would trigger a high-profile military service exemption, a topic of strong public interest in South Korea.
