New documentary explores US military use of Hawaiian trust lands
Original: Office of Hawaiian Affairs documentary examines history of US military use of state public trust lands
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has released a documentary tracing the history of US military use of state public trust lands in Hawaii. The film examines how land held in trust for Native Hawaiians and the broader public came to be occupied by the armed forces, an issue tied to ongoing debates over leases, compensation and sovereignty.
Why now: Renewed public debate in Hawaii over military land leases and Native Hawaiian claims makes the film timely
