Louisiana Wildlife Federation asks residents to dim lights for migration
Original: Louisiana Wildlife Federation is asking everyone to go “lights out” during migration season
The Louisiana Wildlife Federation is asking residents and businesses across the state to switch off unnecessary outdoor lights during bird migration season. Artificial lighting can disorient migrating birds, drawing them off course and toward buildings. The group is urging a "lights out" effort at night to reduce these deaths as birds pass through the region in large numbers.
Why now: Migration season is underway, and reducing light pollution is a simple step people can take to protect birds.
