South Africa sets deadline to phase out green ID books
Original: South Africa Green ID end date: SA Home Affairs announce deadline to block illegal immigrants, begin production of smart ID cards
South Africa's Department of Home Affairs has announced an end date for the old green bar-coded ID book and the start of smart ID card production, framing the move as a way to curb identity fraud and block undocumented immigrants from fraudulently obtaining documents. Citizens are expected to swap their green books for the new smart cards before the deadline.
Why now: The government's announcement of a firm deadline directly affects millions of South Africans who still hold green ID books.
