Egypt Arrests Entire Investigative Newsroom
Original: Egypt: Authorities Arrest Entire Investigative Newsroom
Egyptian authorities have arrested the entire staff of an investigative newsroom, according to Human Rights Watch. The mass detention of a full editorial team marks an escalation in the crackdown on press freedom in Egypt, where journalists critical of the government already face routine intimidation, prosecution and imprisonment. Rights groups have repeatedly called on Cairo to release detained reporters and end restrictions on independent media.
Why now: The unprecedented scale of arresting a whole newsroom makes this a major escalation in Egypt's crackdown on press freedom.
