Commenters are drawing on the legend of Nero fiddling while Rome burned to criticise perceived inaction on climate change, amid ongoing floods and the El Nino pattern intensifying extreme weather. One widely shared remark notes the historical detail that Nero likely played the cithara, an ancient lyre, rather than a fiddle, while using the myth to underscore frustration that leaders appear to be doing nothing as the climate crisis worsens.
Why now: Ongoing climate-driven disasters such as floods and El Nino effects are prompting people to criticise political inaction using this classical analogy.
