Immigration NGO Lays Off Staff While Opposing Union Drive
Original: Immigration NGO Resists Unionization, Lays Off Critical Staff Despite ICE Surge
A US immigration nonprofit has laid off key staff members while resisting efforts by its own workers to unionize, according to a report by The Stranger. The layoffs come as demand for immigration legal aid and support rises amid a surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity. Critics say the organization's treatment of its own workforce undercuts its public mission, and the story has drawn attention to labor tensions inside groups advocating for immigrants' rights.
Why now: The irony of an immigrant-rights group resisting unionization and cutting staff during an ICE enforcement surge is drawing criticism and attention to labor practices within advocacy organizations.
