A priest described by prosecutors as running a cult has been found guilty of rape and assaulting women. The conviction follows a trial in which victims gave evidence of abuse carried out under the cover of his religious authority. The case has drawn widespread attention because of the sect-like nature of the congregation and the scale of the offences committed against vulnerable women who trusted him.
Why now: The guilty verdict in a case involving religious authority and sexual abuse has just been announced.
