Ukraine's falling birth rate turns childbirth into patriotic duty
Original: With more deaths than births in Ukraine, having babies becomes an act of national pride
Ukraine is recording more deaths than births, and having children is increasingly framed as an act of national pride. The demographic crisis, worsened by war, displacement and emigration, has led officials and citizens to treat parenthood as a contribution to the country's survival and future, with families who choose to have babies publicly celebrated.
Why now: The war has sharply accelerated Ukraine's demographic decline, making the country's shrinking population a pressing political and social issue.
