Russian Tu-95M strategic bomber crashes after takeoff

Original: A Russian Tu-95M strategic bomber has crashed and been completely destroyed shortly after takeoff from a base in Krasnoy

A Russian Tu-95M strategic bomber crashed and was completely destroyed shortly after taking off from a base near Krasnoyarovo, Russia. The aircraft, a Cold War-era long-range bomber used in strikes on Ukraine, was lost with no confirmed report yet on crew casualties. The incident adds to a string of losses affecting Russia's small fleet of strategic bombers, which are difficult to replace under sanctions.

Why now: Losses of Russia's scarce nuclear-capable strategic bombers are rare and significant amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
