Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Pope Francis's special envoy for humanitarian affairs and head of the Italian Bishops' Conference, visited Ukrainian prisoners of war during a trip to Moscow. The Vatican has been pushing humanitarian initiatives since the start of the full-scale war, and the visit is being closely watched for signs of progress on prisoner exchanges and other confidence-building steps between Kyiv and Moscow.
Why now: The Vatican's humanitarian diplomacy is one of the few active channels between Ukraine and Russia, so any envoy visit draws attention to possible prisoner exchanges.
