Children's author Kris Bock's new post examines courage in a middle grade historical adventure, arguing that the setting is more than a backdrop for danger. She writes that it influences the choices characters make and helps readers understand what the protagonist, Eveningstar, is trying to protect. The discussion offers teachers, parents and fellow writers a look at how historical fiction can deepen young readers' understanding of bravery and sacrifice.
