In Les Brenets, Switzerland, a giant 'Help' written on the grass-covered bed of what was once Lac des Brenets has become a striking symbol of the region's drought. The lake, part of the Doubs River, dried up in July due to a combination of geological fissures draining water underground and below-average rainfall. Images of the message are being widely shared as concern grows over Europe's shrinking waterways.

Why now: The dramatic image of the dried lake bed and its 'Help' message vividly captures fears about drought and climate change.
