US Waives Human Rights Conditions on $320 Million Egypt Military Aid
Original: US Waives Human Rights Conditions on $320 Million in Military Aid to Egypt
The United States has decided to release $320 million in military aid to Egypt without requiring the human rights progress normally attached to the funds. The waiver bypasses conditions set by Congress that link assistance to improvements in Egypt's rights record. The move is drawing attention from critics who argue it signals that strategic ties with Cairo outweigh human rights concerns in US policy toward the region.
Why now: The US decision to override its own human rights conditions on major military aid to Egypt is controversial and newly announced.
