New film on Vichy regime strikes chord in France
Original: ‘We swept a lot under the carpet’: Vichy regime film hits home in France of 2026
A new French film examining the Vichy regime and France's wartime collaboration with Nazi Germany is drawing attention, with its director saying the country 'swept a lot under the carpet' about that era. The film is resonating with audiences in 2026 as France again debates its history, memory and political direction.
Why now: Renewed debate in France over historical memory and the far right has made the Vichy era newly relevant.
